Jerusalem stone

Doesn't that sound wonderful, after all it has the word Jerusalem in it?  Actually, it's terrible, this city covered in beige. You can lose your mind from the blandness of it all. Beit Shemesh also has a rule, all buildings must be in Jerusalem stone. Everything the same, the same color. That's some democracy. Every building must conform to a government mandate not for safety but for color. 

You look out on the city and just feel boredom. It has the aura of Soviet housing. 

I'm told that Chabad built a few 770 replicas in Jerusalem and has to pay a million shekels a year in fines. I can't confirm but it wouldn't surprise me. Nothing surprises me here except the rare act of common sense.

You hear about these Anglo-communities and you expect Teaneck or Far Rockaway in Israel. Now, wouldn't that mean that the shuls have books in English. Well they don't have that here, even in Anglo shuls where shiurim and announcements are in English. That's even in so-called Anglo communities. Here's what you see on the bookshelves. So unless you can open a book in Hebrew and translate, your Shabbos days will not be very interesting.  This Anglo community thing is a myth. In both of the shuls shown above, I donated books in English, but they were removed from the shelves and don't appear anywhere in the building.  I'm not even sure how to explain this. Why wouldn't an Anglo synagogue want English books? Obviously, gadolim don't disapprove of Torah books in English. The aliyah salesman always starts by claiming that moving to Israel in our times is a mitzvah, even though it isn’t in the way he implies, because he is trying to strong-arm you. That’s how Zionists are. They are all about power and force.
