One of the many falsehoods I was told before making the mistake of aliyah was that "in Israel nobody has a long commute." I was tired of the NY commute and was told that Israelis would never put up with that. Well, my first job here consisted of a 3 hour commute each way. I made that commute along with several other men. The commute from the town in which I live to Jerusalem is an hour, to Tel Aviv more than an hour. I know people who commute to Haifa. Every day, seminary girls commute to Jerusalem. This country is full of commuters making long commutes, braving traffic especially in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. My coworker commutes an hour to Tel Aviv.
Here's what a web search revealed:
Israel's average commute time varies, but official data suggests around 70% of workers finish within 45 minutes, though longer commutes are common, with some studies finding averages around 52 minutes one-way, longer than many countries, with significant variation by city (e.g., Tel Aviv vs. Jerusalem) and mode of transport (cars common, public transit use increasing).
The average one-way commute time in the U.S. is around 27-28 minutes, though this fluctuates slightly with recent pandemic-related shifts, generally hovering between 26 and 28 minutes as remote work changes and in-person commuting rebounds. Commute times vary significantly by mode, with driving alone averaging around 28 minutes and public transit often taking much longer, nearing 47 minutes, according to U.S. Census data.
So the claim about short commuting time in Israel is a bald face lie. Israel has double the commute time of the USA. One wonders, how could shomer Shabbos Jews put forth such a ridiculous claim about the commute in Israel? And the answer I believe is that they are crazy. It's not just that they are lying for aliyah promotion. They are crazy people, no different from a mental patient who declares that he's Napoleon. They are delusional. Did they become crazy from aliyatism or were they crazy even without it? That depends on the person, but crazy they are. Aliyatism attracts crazies and it makes people crazy. It promotes delusion, and that's very dangerous since delusional people don't care about other people. The real world doesn't exist and you don't exist. Only the delusion matters.
