I had a dentist in America  who builds his practice around what he calls sedation dentistry. He says that people are anxious about visiting the dentist and he doesn't want fear to hold them  back from getting the care that they need. He offers sedation dentistry to improve the experience. Primary among his techniques is the use of nitrous oxide to sedate nervous patients, including those with a gag reflex. He wrote in response to my inquiry, "Yes, we can use a few different techniques for patients who have a strong gag reflex. We have many patients with this issue and we have successfully treated them for over 25 years." This dentist was my family's dentist in America. We went to him because of his dedication to sensitive care as we have sensitive children. When we told him that we were moving to Israel, he told us that his brother is a dentist in the city to where we were moving and that we could go to him. Israeli dentists are notoriously rough, which is not who you want poking around your mouth with sharp objects. So you think, I'll hire an American dentist, assuming that you'll get American care. One such dentist recently installed mercury filled amalgam fillings into a patient without telling him, as is customary, that the fillings are 50% mercury. Dentists all over the world notify their patients about the mercury and have them sign disclosure and permission forms. Why didn't the American trained dentist do this? It's because he lives in Israel and is affected by the Israeli mentality of militarism. Call it bossiness if you will. You just order people around. There's no sense here of respect or allowing people to make their own choices. There's no sense of giving them information. You just make declarations like a military commander. That is, after all, the religion here.  The environment got to him. So don't assume that there are Anglo enclaves in Israel....

A friend of mine called a music shop in Tel Aviv. He asked for directions. Here's what followed: Israeli: Look on Google. Don't bother me. Friend: I don't have Google. I don't have Internet. Can you help me with directions? Israeli: Oh, you are Haredi. F... off. Take your 15 children and leave. We don't want you. F... off. --------------------- I have been all over the USA and Canada and to many countries in Europe. Never did I receive treatment like that for being a religious Jew. Do you want to get away from antisemitism? Don't come to Israel. Such lovely people. Welcome home to family.

Another only in Israel story for your reading pleasure. Late night bus from Jerusalem. The driver, an Arab, is annoyed by the conduct of some of the unruly passengers and intentionally misses stops. The passengers start yelling at him. He yells back. A near melee ensures. Passengers are pounding on the glass, threatening to call police. The driver shouts at them ferociously. Children are crying from all the shouting. I don't know if it got worse from there because the person who witnessed this and told me the story got off the bus when the driver did make a stop a few miles from his apartment and found a way home. Can that happen anywhere else in the world? I haven't been to the Congo, but I'm guessing that it's only in the Mideast and possibly only Israel.

  Tonight on the bus from Jerusalem, we endured a ticket checker who had quite the anger problem. He screamed and screamed. It started with a guy who might not have paid. Sometimes, the problem is the card. I once boarded a bus in Jerusalem, swiped my card at least five times because I couldn't tell if it worked or not. You don't get a receipt and the machine screen is not readable. You are waiting for a beep. People are behind me waiting. The driver waved me on, so I went. A ticket checker came on and ran my card through his little machine and couldn't find proof of my paying. I explained that I had swiped it numerous times and the driver waved me on. Didn't matter. The drive didn't back me up. The checker made such a scene and did his best to embarrass me. He was clearly a former army guy. Aggressive, hard faced, muscular. There was such a cruelty to his style.   At the Navon train station in Israel, after you arrive in Israel from the airport, you get a taste of Israeli art and culture with this piano that is covered by stickers showing the faces of Israeli soldiers who have been killed. Welcome to the so-called geulah. The aliyniks see it as romantic that you die for their cause. 

  I have posts showing that the donations to the hospitals are ALL from people in chutz. Israelis either don't have money or don't donate. Aren't there Israeli billionaires? Well, they don't seem to donate any money which shouldn't be surprising. 

Last night I was driving back from the Jerusalem Zoo and made a wrong turn. It didn't take long but the view went from the Jerusalem that tourists extrapolate to be all of Israel to barbed wire, tall concrete  walls, and guard towers. They went on and on. I couldn't figure out where it was safe to turn around. I drove and drove past the dreariness. I felt as though I had entered a war zone. Indeed I had, and it's not hard to do in Israel, that tiny little land which is half desert and half Arab. I kept thinking, geulah? The Modern Orthodox people want to claim that this is geulah? We have been redeemed? Has Hershel Schachter seen the barbed wires and concrete walls? Or does he know only the express lane at the airport and the chauffeured ride to the upscale neighborhoods of Jerusalem where live the wealthy donors who earned their fortunes in chutzeh l'aretz?  He is not the only one.
