I have talked here many times about the gadol sheker, the false gadol, Hershel Schachter, who like Nathan of Gaza, is tricking people into making aliyah when it's the worst move for most of them. He himself doesn't do it. He lives in his bubble at Yeshiva University in New York. His children live in Passaic, Lawrence, Toronto. He misleads the Modern Orthodox world in this matter, but not his kids evidently. I'm told that he he receives hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in income between his salary, speaking engagements, and fundraising percentages.
There are plenty of other so-called rabbis engaging in the same destructive practice. In the baal teshuvah world, there's Yitzchak Berkowitz of Aish HaTorah and Yitzchak Breitowitz of Ohr Somayach. Those are the two largest yeshivas for BTs, not that there are more than a few dozen BTs in each place, despite the the false claims made in their fundraising claims. These are essentially the leaders of those institutions, and that's a frightening reality.
Says Berkowitz: "There is only one reason for a Jew to live in chutzeh l'aretz and that is if he's saving other Jews."
Really? I'll give some other reasons for Jews living in chutz. They can earn a living. They have Sunday off to study Torah. They have enough room in their living quarters for family to visit. They can afford a place to live. They aren't beaten up by police for not going into the army. They aren't secularized in a secular army. They don't have their legs blown off in Gaza. They don't have to spend three years policing and roughing up Arabs in the West Bank. The government is not anti-religious or anti-Haredi. People have much better middos. Chutz is less stressful. Chutz has far better healthcare and education. Maybe they have family in chutz, a grandmother who needs them, or grandchildren who need her. In chutz, a language that is understandable to them is spoken. In short, they can be practicing Jews in chutz. They can observe the mitzvos.
Does this deluded man know that Rav Moshe Feinstein, Rav Joseph Soloveitchik, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Avigdor Miller and many other gadolim all said that you have no obligation to live in Israel and you should live where you can be the best Jew? That doesn't mean necessarily saving other Jews. It means saving yourself.
Does this man who probably frequently says listen to the gadolim actually listen to the gadolim? No, he does not. He makes up his own reality, dresses it up with emotional talk, and pretends that he has Torah values and cares about Jews. He should not be rosh yeshiva or mashgiach of anything. He should consider a career on Wall St.
Unfortunately, his audience is vulnerable. The bochurim in Lakewood would laugh at Berkowitz. But BTs don't know any better. They are innocent. He lives off of American money at Aish HaTorah, in his little bubble in the Old City and tells them to move to Israel where they will live in poverty.
Yitzchok Breitowitz is just as bad. He says you need "a good excuse" to live in chutz. But you don't need an excuse when there's no chiyuv and there are actual chiyuvim to do. BTs in particular are trying to keep Shabbos, trying to get married, trying to deal with religious life. They are immigrants in the frum world and don't need to become double immigrants.
Breitowitz only retired to Israel after being educated in America and having a legal career there. What was his excuse? His audience also is BTs, who struggle with Hebrew, who struggle with religion. He doesn't care about that. He cares about his attachment to a secular state that no doubt has filled his fantasies since he was a kid, growing up I'm told Modern Orthodox.
Breitowitz says that Rav Moshe's teshuvah that there's no obligation to live in Israel is "shveir." He knows better, as they say. No, "Rabbi" Breitowitz, Rav Moshe's teshuvah is not shevir, it's the halacha. Hashem guides him for the sake of the nation. You don't get to question that publicly in your effort to manipulate innocent people.
Lord save us from these dangerous men. Berkowitz and Breitowitz head yeshivish institutions. Are they aware that the high as a kite court nullifed the draft exemption? Are they aware that hundreds of bochurim have been arrested, that Jewish boys are being stopped by police at check points where the full Israeli rough handling at gun point is at play? Do they care? Are they aware that yeshivish gadolim say never to join the army? These men are frauds.
They have been so spoiled by American affluence that they all fell into a fantasy that geulah has come and that we should all ruin ourselves by living in Israel. They have made the classic mistake of pushing their luck, of going too far.
Schachter only visits. Breitowitz only came after a legal career in America. and Berkowitz, he's lives in mini-America at Aish in their luxurious building in the Old City across from the kosel. That's not where you will live. You will live in a place like this:
Fortunately, we have still have a few rabbis around who have a grasp on reality. We look to the Sephardim to give us a sense of it:
Rabbi Yosef Mizrachi:
They don't want religious Jews in Israel. The wicked people took over. They control the Jewish agency. Every Orthodox they see immediately they begin to torture him. If they see a reform gay, in 3 weeks he's approved. Him and his husband. Immediately. But if they see a Orthodox family. The nightmare begin. I'm talking from experience. I have more than a 100 families who have been tortured between 1 to 6 years already. Include my neighbor. He told me "Baruch Hashem I sold the house," next door neighbor to me and "We moving to Eretz Yisroel." That was two months ago, I said to him, "Don't be naive." He said, "No, we give them all the papers, we confirmed they have everything." He's a tzadick. He doesn't have any evil in him. He cannot imagine that people especially Jews, especially Israeli can be so evil. He doesn't know. He lives in Monsey with religious people. Grew up all his life religious. He doesn't know evil people. I told him, "My friend, take long breath. It's gonna take a long time until they let you move. "No, bleh, bleh, bleh," Two months, back to square one. He has no place to live. He has to go to live by his kids. That's what they do to people. They torture us so that we should not make aliyah to Israel. Would you ever believe that one day you would want to run from here, from the antisemitism or the riot, and you would like to run to the Holy Land, Jews from the Erev Rav will fight you and not let you in? They took over. They stole Israel. They stole Israel. That's what's happening now, robotai. If you are an Israeli citizen, you can go in. But if your wife is not, she cannot go in. I know a couple. The husband is American, but Israeli citizen. The wife is not Israeli citizen but her father is. They wouldn't let them in. They arrive to Israel. They shame them in front of everyone, like Nazis. And they put them back on a flight, send them back, and even the girl was begging to go to the bathroom, on purpose they would not let her go to the bathroom. And they grabbed their passport. "We'll give it to you when you get on a flight." Like Nazis. Mamash like Nazis. When they see religious people, their hate rise to the highest level you can imagine. This is in Israeli airport. As soon as they see religious person, it's mamash the same as Nazis used to see Jews. Same exact reaction. That's Israel right now. You should know that.
Rabbi Mizrachi is not a naïve and spoiled American like these other rabbis listed here are. He was born and raised in Israel. He's telling you what life is like here. Don’t be naive.
