Somehow I found myself watching network news from Ohio today. I don't know how this came up on my screen but I know that it was an enjoyable experience even as I never watch network news. Oh, there was a weather report given by a fairly modestly dressed woman. And there was news about construction and state government. Yes, it was all women talking. They have become the talking heads on TV, which has become something of a fashion show. But their speaking was clear and done without shouting or hysterics like in Israel. It was calming. Then came news about the Mideast and it was all war, missiles, retaliation, death. I was reminded of Louis CKs observation that the world has changed so much but not in the Mideast. That's exactly the same.
I found myself dreaming of making aliyah to Ohio where a day is just a day, not another war saga.
What I did to my life by moving to this lunatic asylum, it defies description. If I still knew how to cry, that's all I'd do.
Of course, the reporting made Israel seem like the victim. It was retaliating for the Hezbollah bombing of Northern Israel when it is Israel that has repeatedly broken the cease fire and with much more firepower than Hezbollah. Same story with Lebanon. That Israel has been bombing Gaza wasn't mentioned. This was the one part of the news that seemed completely dishonest, and we have heard reporting like this all our lives. So even as the news made Israel seem like not such a nice place to be, it made it seem noble and brave, which is going to attract an idealistic Jew even as sensible goyim say no way am I going to live there. But when you have rabbis pushing aliyah - and today even the yeshivish ones do this, particularly in schools for baalei teshuvah like Aish and Ohr Somayach and Shappells- that will overcome the bombing part of it and leave you with the desire to be noble and brave for your people. And then they tell you that those nice goyim from Ohio will become Nazis soon so you better run from America and go live with the wonderful Israelis who will love you like a brother. And the economy is booming. The future is Israel. All that propaganda, and I'm telling you it's all lies, pushes you away from nice Ohio to come ruin your life in Israel where you can dream about living in Ohio, which would have been so easy to do.
