All too frequently, this is the Israeli mentality

mostly military

A high percentage of Israeli technology is in military stuff, recent example: Another major Israeli cybersecurity firm has been sold in a blockbuster deal. Following Wiz's $32 billion sale, CyberArk is now being acquired by Palo Alto Networks for $25 billion. Founded about 20 years ago by Israeli Nir Zuk, now its CTO, Palo Alto is the world's largest cybersecurity company.

Is this geula?

Life in Israel is like this. Here's some instructions about entry into the Bloomfield Science Museum: Note the references to directives from the Home Front Command as well as evacuated residents. And here's the ubiquitous reminder of hostages. I'm not saying that we shouldn't be reminded of hostages, just that Israel is a stressful place. Same reminder at the Tel Aviv museum of art All over Israel are stickers and posters with the faces of hostages and deceased soldiers.  You want to call this geula? Is this what we longed for?

Something to watch for

The Modern Orthodox world is obsessed with aliyah. But be careful. The American Modern Orthodox personality is somewhat effete, certainly many of the men are. They are naïve and spoiled too. So they tell you to move to Israel and you expect to move to Israel and find a country full of people like this. But you go to Israel and encounter Israelis. They generally are rough, aggressive, abrasive, and sarcastic. They are not like the aliyah loving rabbi you knew from Teaneck. Compare: Nice Americans Israelis The IDF reservist was arrested but released a week later and all charges dropped. The guy he killed, David, was a Palestinian who converted to Judaism a few years earlier. He was waiting to catch a bus to Jerusalem where he was studying the Jewish religion. He was killed because he was speaking Hebrew with a Palestinian accent.

Military Police launch probe after soldier reports rape, then dies by suicide - Times of Israel

Haaretz report says several officers questioned for largely ignoring woman’s report, failing to meet with her after failed suicide attempt a day before she died on base The Military Police on Tuesday confirmed it had opened an investigation into the suicide of a female soldier a day after a failed attempt to kill herself and several days after she reported being raped, the Haaretz daily reported. Ten days before the soldier died in April of this year, she told an officer at her base that she was raped at a party during the Purim holiday, and complained about her mental condition, the report said. Despite the complaint, she was not taken to be examined at a hospital, nor did representatives of the military chief’s gender affairs adviser unit — who were notified of the incident — meet with the soldier, the report said. Ten days before the soldier died in April of this year, she told an officer at her base that she was raped at a party during the Purim holiday, and complained about h...

The saga of the refrigerator

Has it been four visits or five? I forget. That's how many times a refrigerator repairman has come to our apartment to fix our new fridge. He came again last week. And the verdict is in. We need a new fridge because this one that we purchased a year ago is leaking freon, or gaz as the repair guy called it. Fixing it might not even fix it for good, and the cost will approach that of a new fridge. So I return again to Rabbi Hershel Schachter and his confident remarks that Israel has all the latest inventions and is not lacking in anything. I'm researching for new fridges, and part of that research is going to various fridges around town and checking their level of cold. I'm finding that many of them are warm. One was sufficiently cold, but most have not been. So I asked around with the following question. "Is your fridge at home cold? The one in my office is warm and it seems that the food in there is spoiled. The cheese is warm. I have the same problem at home. I have s...

Compare and contrast

The problems you deal with in Passaic The problems you deal with in Israel The problem with the latter is not that Haredim aren't joining the army, it's that this country hates Haredim, that the press is totally biased against them (calling them deserters when the term doesn't apply), that the press is unprofessional (Haaretz is supposed to be Israel's most professional paper), that young Jewish men and their families are subject to such controversy and stress.  Why subject yourself to this? You have a nice safe country to live in. Are you so spoiled? That's not good enough. You want to pretend geulah has come. Talk about entitlement.

Daily dose of hostility to Haredim

They say Haaretz has the best journalism in Israel. Here's their journalism: That's what you call a biased headline. Desertion means abandoning the army in a time of war. There's no war here, there's just chiloni obsession with bombing the everything that moves. The same newspaper speaks with outrage on how the IDF has destroyed or made uninhabitable 70% of the buildings in Gaza. The same paper tells us of all the military deaths and casualties. But it can't understand why Haredim want no part of this. And it doesn't even try to understand why Haredim feel that a secular army will destroy Haredi youth. My neighbor has a son who couldn't take all the pressure and threats to join the army so he joined. They promised him that he'd be on a desk job with Haredim. They put him in a room of young chiloni women in skin tight pants. He is losing his mind from this. He had never ever spoken to young women before.  I hear stories like this all time. Netan. promises...

Eretz Yisroel is a Dangerous Place - Parsha Pearls

Parsha Pearls: Parshas Tzav If he brings the offering for thanksgiving… (7:12) Rashi says that this thanksgiving is for a miracle performed for the person, in which he was saved from a dangerous situation, for example, one who returns from a sea voyage, a desert trek, one who was released from jail, or one who recovered from an illness. Nowadays we have no thank-offerings, but Chazal instituted the blessing “Hagomel” for these same situations. The Shulchan Aruch (219:9) says that these four cases are only examples, and one should say the blessing after being saved from any dangerous situation. We have already mentioned once (Toldos, p. ??) the Satmar Rav’s statement that the danger in Eretz Yisroel is so great that one living there should say the blessing “Hagomel” every morning to thank Hashem that he woke up alive and did not see the fulfillment of the terrifying punishment for the violation of the Three Oaths (see below). Now we will take this opportunity to quote some of the predic...

Got to be the South

Wouldn't you rather live here? https://x.com/i/status/1946627749432467893 The homeowner thanked them for their apology and told them if ever they want anything all they have to do is ask. I'm guessing by the accent, the patois (y'all) and the good manners that this took place in the American South. Oh but they are not Jews, you say. Tell me what you care about. If you worship God, then you care about truth and goodness no matter who abides by it. You'll want to be around those people. If you worship Jews, then you'll want to be around them no matter what they do. For example some Israelis: https://x.com/i/status/1946914638828085656 More from Israelis: https://x.com/i/status/1946844796137738338 And more: https://x.com/i/status/1946853316559843411 It's my sense that many Orthodox Jews today don't worship God. They worship Jews. That's their god.  That's a false god. The Jewish people are not God. Only God is God. He is unique. He is One. There is no ot...

Isolation

You are told that moving to Israel is coming home, but you do it and find yourself alone. Israelis are not friendly people. Even the religious community is not good in this regard. Part of the problem is lack of space. The apartments are tiny and that makes it difficult to have guests. There's no place for guests to sleep. But even Shabbos meals are a problem. You can't have over a family of seven. And families with small children are a problem because there's no place for the kids to play. You set up a toy for them six inches from the dining table and try not to step on them. Here's a dining room in a $1.1 million apartment. How many guests can you fit in that table? Additionally, the culture is such, and small space may have a role in this, that boys and girls are not to be invited over at the same time. So a family of boys and girls is not welcome, and if the host family has boys and girls nobody is welcome.  This becomes a problem even for friends visiting friends. ...

Real estate lesson (Updated)

Here's a real estate lesson for you. In Israel 3 rooms means 2 bedrooms: And 5 rooms means 4 bedrooms. 3 minus 2 = 1.   5 minus 4 = 1.   So what's the one? That's your living-dining-den-playroom. It's all one room.  And here's that room: Viewed from the other direction: Isn't that glorious? That's where you stick your dining room table and your couch. The kids play or try to between them. All this for 2,190,000 NIS or $625,549 in a town outside of Jerusalem. And that's for a 2-bedroom. A 3-bedroom apartment will cost you 2,650,000 NIS or $791,580.  Here's your all purpose room for $791, 580. It's a little bigger. Here's the all purpose room shown with table in a different apartment. How many guests can you fit at this table that has to be pushed aside so you can get in the door? This apartment cost 3.8 million shekels which is 1.1 million dollars. Here's your dining room for a million and a hundred thousand dollars. Here's your all pu...
